The Legacy of the Russian Avant-Garde in Soviet Underground Art

Lecture by Evgenia Kikodze, Curator of the exhibition, Matter of Light
How did the radical artistic experiments of the Russian avant-garde influence the next generations of artists working outside the official Soviet art system?

In this lecture, Evgenia Kikodze will explore the legacy of the Russian avant-garde in Soviet underground art from the 1960s to the 1980s, tracing connections between early twentieth-century artistic movements and the practices of Soviet nonconformist artists.

The lecture is part of the public programme accompanying Matter of Light, curated by Eugenia Kikodze. The exhibition brings together works by more than 20 modern and contemporary artists from the Arab world and Eastern Europe, exploring the role of light across generations, artistic movements, and practices.
