What is Wayang Kulit? How did the shadow theatre traditions of Bali and Java become one of the world’s most fascinating forms of storytelling, combining mythology, sculpture, movement, music, and light?
This spring, the well-known Russian-speaking Saturday school Gymnasium No.1 joins Dom Art Projects to open the doors to its Art Laboratory and invite children and parents to experience the magic of art lessons together.
This is not a traditional art class or drawing school. It is a deep immersion into artistic thinking, where every Saturday children enter a creative laboratory and create contemporary art objects inspired by different artistic movements, cultures, and ideas — always reinterpreting them through their own imagination.
Through one of the school’s most beloved workshops — Indonesian Shadow Theatre — participants will become co-authors of this unique experience.
Inspired by the epic worlds of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and accompanied by the hypnotic sounds of the Gamelan orchestra, families will design original characters, create giant articulated puppets, experiment with silhouette and movement, and finally perform their own shadow theatre piece behind an illuminated screen.
The workshop becomes a celebration of art, literature, theatre, music, craftsmanship, and imagination — and a rare opportunity to experience how contemporary art education can become a true adventure.
